Monaco will be the venue for the start of the Vuelta a España for the first time on 22 August 2026, making it the only city to have hosted the opening stage of all three Grand Tours.

Hosting La Vuelta is much more than a celebration of sport, its athletes, and performance in an exceptionally demanding discipline. It is a symbol of our country’s openness and international reach”, said Prince Albert II at the official unveiling of the route, attended by numerous cycling stars from all over the world including Tadej Pogacar and Peter Sagan.

On 22 August 2026, some 180 riders will battle it out in an individual time trial on the opening day, starting from the legendary Casino de Monte-Carlo. They will follow a route that takes in some of the Principality’s most iconic locations, including Larvotto, Port Hercule, and the Stade Louis II, before crossing the finishing line in the exact same spot where the drivers in the Formula 1 Grand Prix traditionally take the chequered flag. A day later, the second stage will get under way outside the Prince’s Palace, with the peloton racing off to cross the Alpes-Maritimes on their way to Manosque. According to the organisers, the 2026 Vuelta is set to be “one of the toughest ever”. The race will reach its climax in the Spanish city of Granada on 11 September 2026.

This sporting event is our chance to show the world a different side of our country, one committed to promoting sport that is truly popular, in the fullest sense of the word.”

H.S.H. Prince Albert II.

In 2026, Monaco will become the first and only city in the world to have hosted the start of all three Grand Tours, Europe’s most prestigious cycling races. The 49th Giro d’Italia began in Monte-Carlo on 18 May 1966, watched by Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace. It coincided with celebrations marking the centenary of Monte-Carlo, which was officially inaugurated in 1866… The team presentation ceremony that year was televised by Eurovision, whilst the 1966 edition also saw the first ever Girofestival, with many well-known celebrities of the era in attendance.

Monaco also has a special relationship with the Tour de France. “Without the Grimaldi family, the Tour de France might never have resumed in 1947. In 1946, after the war, a race from Monaco to Paris was organised with the riders’ accommodation paid for by the Princely Family, paving the way for the Tour de France to rise from the ashes a year later,” explains the Director of the Tour de France, Christian Prudhomme. The Principality has hosted a stage of the Tour on no fewer than eight occasions. It was the venue for the Grand Départ in 2009, with a route that followed part of the Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit. In 2024, the final stage took place in Monaco – an individual time trial from Monaco to Nice covering a distance of 55 kilometres, with 700 metres of total elevation gain. It was the first time since 1904 that the Tour de France had finished anywhere other than the Champs-Élysées.

Monaco is also a magnet for elite cyclists. “Around forty World Tour cyclists live in Monaco. “We sometimes ride together when training,” says Monaco’s very own Victor Langellotti. Many champions take part in the Beking charity race, which brings together professionals, amateurs, and families every year.  In 2025, Jonathan Milan won the 3rd Beking Monaco criterium, ahead of rival Tadej Pogacar.

Historically, the Principality hosted its own Monaco Cycling Grand Prix from 1949 to 1985. The Union Cycliste de Monaco became the Principality’s official cycling club in 1952, having previously been part of A.S. Monaco.
