Monaco and fashion: an endless bond

For decades, Monaco has fostered a special relationship with fashion.

Fashion holds a special, central place in Monegasque cultural policy. This is linked to the Principality’s ability to foster successful initiatives between fashion houses and cultural institutions. In 2011, for example, On Aura Tout Vu breathed new life into the collections of the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (NMNM), in particular the Madeleine de Galéa collection of 19th century dolls. Likewise, this summer 2025, the “Les Années folles de Coco Chanel” exhibition explores the abundant creative output of Gabrielle Chanel.

Princesses of Monaco: fashion ambassadors

The unique status of fashion in Monaco is also directly linked to the royal family. Immediately following her arrival in the Principality, Princess Grace incarnated a Hollywood elegance that has become timeless. Her special connection to Hermès led to the creation of the iconic “Kelly” bag, renamed in her honour. Her affinity for Chanel suits helped establish Monaco’s reputation as a centre of elegance.

From Chanel to Monte Carlo Fashion Week

Yet another example of this enduring tradition is Monte Carlo Fashion Week (MCFW), created in 2013 by the Fashion Council of Monaco with the leadership of its Chair, Federica Nardoni Spinetta. Under the high patronage of Princess Charlène of Monaco, the MCFW welcomes international designers, young and upcoming talent and sustainable fashion companies every year.
