In both Paris and Monaco, the Albert I, Prince of Monaco Foundation continues the work of its founder to enhance our understanding of the oceans and help to protect them.

Prince Albert I founded the Institute of Oceanography – Albert I, Prince of Monaco Foundation in 1906, with the aim of ensuring that the oceans were better “understood, loved and protected”.

For its founder, who led many scientific explorations at sea and was a pioneer of modern oceanography, it was about sharing the discoveries of this emerging science with as wide an audience as possible.

Consequently, the Institute of Oceanography was, from the beginning, split across two iconic sites: the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco and the Oceanographic Institute in Paris.

Built on a cliff side in Monaco’s old town, the Oceanographic Museum offers visitors 6,500 m2 of exhibition space, filled with aquariums that are home to more than 6,000 specimens, a sea turtle rescue centre, historic and scientific collections, the skeletons of marine mammals and a cabinet of curiosities created by artist Mark Dion. The museum regularly hosts scientific and art exhibitions.

The Oceanographic Institute in Paris is located on Montagne Sainte-Geneviève in the city’s Latin quarter, and provides a base for stakeholders involved in ocean management and protection, as well as scientific and political organisations.

It also hosts ocean-themed events (seminars, workshops, conferences).

The time has come for global attention to be paid to the major problems facing the ocean, which humanity must address using the best resources it can bring to bear, for this is what will accelerate the progress needed to overcome our barbarity
