The Maison du numérique opened in July 2023 to fight e-illiteracy, defined as difficulty with, or the inability to use digital devices and information technology due to a partial or total lack of knowledge of how they work.
“Monaco is and must remain an appealing region. This requires doing everything we can to close the digital divide”, said the Minister of State Pierre Dartout. The centre, created by the Government, Monaco City Hall, and the Principality’s telecoms operator, Monaco Telecom, provides every Monegasque citizen, resident or employee, free of charge, the tools they need to use digital products and services. Workshops are held on “getting started with a smartphone”, “applying online”, and “learning to recognise a scam”.
Digital learning is ensured free of charge by several advisors on site, who teach participants using interactive terminals, tablets, computers and smartphones. The centre also hosts conferences and ‘decoding’ sessions led by experts in emerging technologies, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and online services.
Monaco Telecom CEO Martin Peronnet pointed out: “We cannot be a digital nation without ensuring that everyone takes part. Faced with a proliferation of digital tools, online services and other applications, more and more people are finding themselves lost, underinformed, and at a disadvantage in our highly digitalised world. As stakeholders in telecommunications, we have a duty to ensure more than just connectivity.”
