Monaco’s education system is based on the curricula used by the French national system, with some specific features of its own: a more intensive English-language programme taught from nursery school through to the final year of secondary; a “French as a foreign language” programme to facilitate the integration of non-French-speaking pupils; a programme that promotes reading and cultural education; teaching of the Monegasque language and the history of Monaco to promote the national culture; and a stronger sports component (physical education and swimming classes are part of the timetable for even the youngest pupils, well-developed facilities are available, specially adapted timetables can be arranged to accommodate sports training, etc.).
The Principality has ten state-run schools: seven nursery and primary schools, a collège (secondary school for children aged 11–15), a general and technological lycée (for pupils aged 15–18) and a lycée offering vocational and catering training.
There are also 2 private religious establishments under contract with the State, but also the International School of Monaco (bilingual English-French education from nursery to high school), the British School of Monaco (education based on the British education system) , the Princess Grace Dance Academy and the AS Monaco Academy. Higher education courses are offered by the International University of Monaco (business school), the École Supérieure d’Arts Plastiques and the Nursing Training Institute.
In addition, there are two private denominational schools under contract with the state, the International School of Monaco (offering bilingual education in English and French from nursery to upper secondary level), the Princess Grace Academy of Dance, and higher education options: the International University of Monaco (a business school), the Monaco Art School and the Institute of Nurse Training.
