They come from France, the United States, Italy and the Middle East. They travel as couples, with their families or on business. A study published by the Monegasque Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (IMSEE) in 2026 paints a picture of a diverse, loyal and international mix of visitors.

What does a typical visitor to Monaco look like? The latest survey conducted by IMSEE reveals a destination that attracts a remarkably wide range of people, from visitors living nearby to travellers from all corners of the globe.

Millions of visitors

In 2025, Monaco recorded nearly 6.7 million visits. The vast majority — 92.5% — were day visitors, who spend the day exploring the Principality before continuing their journey along the French Riviera. Tourists staying at least one night accounted for 7.5% of visits, representing almost 500,000 stays. Yet these visitors alone generated more than 60% of all tourist spending in the Principality.

A global destination

France is Monaco’s largest source market, with almost one in two visitors residing in France. However, nearly 42% of tourists staying overnight live outside the European Union, reflecting the Principality’s global appeal. After France, visitors come primarily from Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Switzerland.

Travelling as a couple

Couples account for 37% of visitor groups, ahead of families at 32.7%. Solo travellers come third, while visits by colleagues reflect the importance of business tourism in the Principality.

Leisure comes first

For almost 95% of visitors, Monaco is primarily a leisure destination. However, among those who stay overnight, nearly one in four stays includes a business element. International conferences, trade shows, business events, meetings… The Principality has long combined leisure and MICE tourism, two complementary segments that contribute to its year-round appeal.

Visitors who take their time

Tourists staying overnight spend an average of 3.8 days in the Principality. Hotels remain their preferred form of accommodation, chosen for more than seven in ten stays, although apartment rentals become more popular in spring and stays aboard boats during the summer season.

Tourism as an economic driver

Beyond visitor numbers, the “Tourism in Monaco 2025” survey highlights the economic importance of tourism. Visitors spend an average of €92 per person per day, although spending varies considerably depending on the type of stay. Tourists naturally devote a significant share of their budget to accommodation, but also to dining, shopping, and cultural and leisure experiences. Overall, direct visitor spending reached €1.35 billion in 2025, equivalent to 6.8% of the Principality’s turnover (excluding financial and insurance activities).
