The 11th APG World Connect summit was held in Monaco from 1 to 3 November 2019. The theme for the event was: “8 billion passengers in 2030: A risky challenge?”

At a time when protecting the climate and the energy transition are increasingly becoming global priorities, the air transport sector is often at the centre of the debate.

To identify sustainable responses to climate challenges while enabling the global population to continue to travel (more than 4 billion flights were taken in 2019), the 520 participants at the APG World Connect summit, representing more than 90 airlines, gathered in Monaco from 1 to 3 November 2019 to discuss the various potential solutions.

Carbon offsetting, using artificial intelligence to optimise ground service vehicle management and make it less polluting, cutting journey times, improving the energy performance of aircraft through the introduction of new designs (cf. the Flying-V project developed by KLM) and the development of less polluting fuels such as biofuels… there are plenty of options under discussion.

While none of them can currently offer an immediate and comprehensive response to the numerous issues facing the sector, they all demonstrate aviation’s determination to tackle the critical question of its environmental responsibility.

Monaco would appear to offer a setting ideally suited to the task.
