The Monegasque basketball team is breaking record after record, putting them back in the spotlight in recent years, including a EuroCup win for the Roca Team in 2021. French champions for the past two years, they also finished the 2024–2025 season as runners-up in Europe.

AS Monaco, better known as the Roca Team, has established itself in recent years as one of Europe’s most successful basketball clubs. Behind this spectacular rise lies a history that stretches back more than a century.

Basketball in Monaco began in 1928 with the creation of the first basketball section of AS Monaco. By the 1950s, the club had already made its mark on the French basketball scene, securing its first major achievements, including a runner-up finish in France’s top division, then known as Nationale 1 and now the Betclic Élite.

A Spectacular Rise

After several decades of ups and downs, alternating between promotions and relegations, Monaco basketball truly regained its momentum during the 2015–16 season. What followed was a remarkable ascent that would transform the Roca Team into one of the most ambitious clubs in Europe.

AS Monaco Basket made history by becoming the first French team to climb from Nationale 2 to Pro A in just four seasons, capped by the Pro B French Championship title in 2015. This meteoric progression laid the foundations for the club’s current success.

Three Consecutive Leaders Cups

Under the leadership of head coach Zvezdan Mitrovic, the Roca Team quickly emerged as a dominant force in French basketball. Between 2016 and 2018, Monaco finished atop the regular-season standings for three consecutive years and achieved an unprecedented feat by winning three straight Leaders Cups. This period of dominance firmly established Monaco among the elite clubs in France.

EuroCup Glory in 2021

Monaco’s progress on the European stage was equally impressive. Twenty-nine years after its last appearance in continental competition, the club reached the FIBA Basketball Champions League Final Four in 2017 before advancing to the final the following year. These performances confirmed the ambitions of a club increasingly focused on Europe.

The real turning point came in 2021. By defeating UNICS Kazan in the EuroCup Finals, the Roca Team became the first French club ever to win the competition and secured its place in the EuroLeague, Europe’s premier basketball tournament. It was a landmark achievement in the club’s history.

An Unprecedented Quadruple in 2026

Season after season, Monaco continued to grow. Led by standout players such as Mike James, Elie Okobo, Jordan Loyd, John Brown and Yakuba Ouattara, the club assembled a roster capable of competing with the continent’s very best teams.

The results soon followed. After several unsuccessful attempts, the Roca Team finally captured the first French Championship title in its history during the 2022–23 season. In 2026, the club achieved an unprecedented quadruple, winning the French Championship, the Leaders Cup, the French Cup and the French Super Cup in the same year — a truly remarkable accomplishment.

EuroLeague Runner-Up in 2025

Monaco’s rise on the European stage continued. After being eliminated in the EuroLeague quarter-finals in 2022, the club reached the Final Four in 2023 and finished third overall. Then, in 2025, Monaco took another historic step by reaching its first-ever EuroLeague Final, becoming the first French club in more than thirty years to compete for Europe’s most prestigious title.

To continue its pursuit of European glory, the club entrusted the team to one of the greatest legends in European basketball: Vassilis Spanoulis. Following the successful tenures of Zvezdan Mitrovic and Sasa Obradovic, the Greek coach embodies the next phase of Monaco’s ambition — winning the EuroLeague.

At the Heart of Stade Louis II

Today, the Roca Team plays its home games at the Gaston-Médecin Arena, located within the iconic Stade Louis II. Renovated to meet EuroLeague standards, the venue reflects the club’s transformation and growing stature.

In just a few years, Monaco has evolved from an ambitious outsider into one of the leading forces in European basketball.

That’s wonderful. It’s the result of a long journey and a decades-long desire for sport to be an important part of development in the Principality, not only in terms of communication but also of inclusion, to bring all the strengths of society together

H.S.H Prince Albert II.
