The Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE) is a consultative assembly, whose purpose is to give an opinion on financial, commercial, industrial, touristic, social, environmental and urban planning issues in Monaco.

It is therefore consulted by the Prince’s Government on Bills and Sovereign Ordinances relating to these issues, and can also express wishes.

To do so, the CESE meets every three months, at the invitation of its President. The opinions and wishes to be voted on are first examined by the seven different sections, namely “Financial Affairs,” “Industry and New Technologies,” “Trade and Tourism,” “Social Affairs,” “Housing, Society and the Living Environment,” “Environment, Urban Planning and Forward Studies” and “Education, Culture and Quality of Life.”

The CESE is comprised of 36 members, appointed for three years. The Government puts forward 12, selects 12 from a list of 20 names drawn up by the Monaco Union of Trade Unions, and chooses 12 from a list of 20 names drawn up by the Federation of Monegasque Businesses. A Coordination Committee, consisting of the President (currently Caroline Rougaignon-Vernin, in the photo opposite), two Vice-Presidents and the seven Section Presidents, also directs the CESE.
