Thanks to the MonaMove app and two smart fitness stations designed by former rugby player Sébastien Chabal, Monaco offers an original way to engage in sport for wellbeing.

Since December 2019, the sea walls at Monaco’s ports have been home to two smart fitness stations that can be used independently and are completely free.

“The MonaMove project lies at the heart of the Extended Monaco smart city programme. It uses digital technology to support sport for wellbeing in the Principality,” explains Frédéric Genta, Country Chief Officer for Attractiveness and the Digital Transition.

The principle behind the project is a simple one: after downloading the app to their smartphones, users can create their own workout programmes, appropriate to their fitness levels.

There are around a hundred different exercises to choose from, designed by former rugby player Sébastien Chabal, and video tutorials are available for each one.

The programme includes muscle strengthening, posture and stretching exercises, so the MonaMove app allows users to carry a genuine digital trainer around with them.

The 18 pieces of apparatus at each station, installed by Vivaciti, allow users to do pull-ups or press-ups on a bench, test their agility or take aim at a punching bag.

“Eventually, it could even be possible to challenge a person who’s online and training at a station in Lyon – to a bout on the punching bag, for example,” the former French international player has said.

The two fitness stations, located on the new sea wall at Port Hercule and in Fontvieille, are powered by solar energy.

Each includes a full weather station equipped with sensors to measure temperature, humidity and air quality.

This enables users to choose the best time for their workout, taking into account busy periods and the weather.
