National Energy Transition Pact: a collective climate commitment

Having committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 (compared with 1990) and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the Principality is mobilising everyone in the country to help meet this challenge. Changing our energy model requires fundamental adjustments, which can only be made if everyone contributes.

The Mission for Energy Transition, set up in 2016, is part of the Ministry of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development and its role is to pool resources and coordinate initiatives.

The war on plastic

Monaco has been actively working to reduce its plastic waste since 2016. The aim is to achieve zero single-use plastic waste by 2030.

Single-use bags, straws and drink stirrers, cotton buds, disposable glasses, cutlery and plates… All of these plastic products are now banned in Monaco, a testament to the Principality’s policy on combatting plastic waste.

A map to make the most of solar power

The Principality of Monaco’s solar resource map provides details of the solar capacity of each building so that the appropriate photovoltaic panels can be installed on roofs.

To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, Monaco has decided to increase the share of renewable energy, with a particular focus on the use of solar power.

The Principality has access to plenty of solar resources, experiencing an average of 2,917 hours of useful sunshine every year.

Entering a new era with MonaBike

By tripling its fleet of electric bikes, Monaco is seeking to encourage soft mobility.

Through MonaBike, Monaco hopes to develop a cycling culture. In summer 2019, the Principality gained a new fleet of self-service electric bikes. A total of 300 electric bikes are available from 32 stations.

Monaco: A pionneer in seawater heat pumps

Since 1963, the Principality has been using the Mediterranean Sea as a source of energy – most of the buildings along its coastline are equipped with a heat pump system.

Monaco was one of the first countries to use the seawater from its coast as a source of renewable energy, and has been doing so for more than half a century. The Principality installed its first seawater heat pump in 1963, at the Rainier swimming stadium on the port, to heat the water in the swimming pool.

Today, there are more than 80, laid out in twenty or so seawater loops and producing almost 20% of the national energy needs!
