Having committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 (compared with 1990) and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the Principality is mobilising everyone in the country to help meet this challenge. Changing our energy model requires fundamental adjustments, which can only be made if everyone contributes.

The Mission for Energy Transition, set up in 2016, is part of the Ministry of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development and its role is to pool resources and coordinate initiatives.

The Mission’s work is based on the Energy Transition White Paper, the result of a consultation exercise involving 60 key Monegasque organisations which was published in 2017.

The perceptions, expectations, best practices and ideas gathered as part of this process were used to draw up a road map covering the three sectors which account for the most greenhouse gas emissions in Monaco: transport, energy consumption by buildings, and household waste-to-energy generation (each accounts for around 30% of total emissions).

A natural follow-up to this initiative, the National Energy Transition Pact was launched in 2018 with the aims of changing consumption habits and behaviours, creating new opportunities and supporting the Monegasque community through this major transformation.

Comprising a commitment charter and sectoral action plans, the Pact offers those who sign up – individuals, companies, institutions and associations – the opportunity to make a concrete contribution to the country’s energy transition.
