Théâtre des Muses: a hotbed of creativity and theatrical expression

Since 2012, the Théâtre des Muses has offered Monaco a rich and varied programme, with something for both adults and children.

Monaco’s Théâtre des Muses is the story of an old bakery in the Moneghetti district, which was transformed into a performance hall. This intimate venue, with a capacity of around a hundred, was opened to the public in 2012 after three years of renovation work.

It is the brainchild of theatre enthusiast Anthéa Sogno. The Monegasque denizen, actress and director wanted to “create a place in Monaco where actors and the public could come together and interact”. It is a friendly venue where the bread oven still takes pride of place at the back of the stage, sharing the space with red velvet chairs and Belle Époque furnishings. It is a venue where actors can chat to audience members over a drink at the end of the performance.

From classics and Commedia dell‘arte to activist theatre, the varied programme presented by the Théâtre des Muses complements that of the Théâtre Princesse Grace. It features primarily plays selected during the Avignon Festival, one of the most important contemporary performing arts events in the world (the Off festival includes more than 1,300 plays and 1,000 theatre companies!).

Since it was first opened, the stage at the Théâtre des Muses has hosted the giant of French theatre that is Philippe Caubère, as well as Molière award-winning actor and director Alexis Michalik.
