The country’s active and diligent participation in debates has lent it a certain aura when it comes to key international topics and issues that are important to H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince, who regularly leads Monegasque delegations to General Assembly sessions.
Monaco officially became a member of the United Nations on 28 May 1993 (see the photo of the flag-raising ceremony, opposite). “This day will obviously remain an important date in the already long history of our country, because it is the certainty of its future”, declared Prince Rainier III who made this candidacy. The country had previously held observer status since June 1956 and was already a member of many UN institutions, including UNESCO and WHO.
The country’s international commitment to peace, protecting human rights, sustainable development and safeguarding the oceans, and humanitarian aid is thus based on a longstanding tradition.
Prince Albert Ist had thus created the Institute of Peace, ancestor of the League of Nations, which would itself, in 1946, become the United Nations.
Monaco’s recent history at the UN has been marked by several speeches and actions by H.S.H. Prince Albert II and his government:
the request made in September 2013 for a Sustainable Development Goal devoted to the oceans; signature of the Paris Agreement by Minister of State Serge Telle in April 2016 (see photo opposite); two vice-presidencies of the General Assembly (54th and 68th sessions); and the country’s participation in the UNEP Executive Board, the Commission on Sustainable Development and the Commission for Social Development.
The Principality has also signed up to more than 40 international treaties. Its work within the organisation is carried out by three Permanent Representations to the United Nations (in New York, Geneva and Vienna), a Permanent Delegation to UNESCO and several representatives to specialist institutions including the FAO, the IAEA and the IMO.
On June 19, 2023, to celebrate this important anniversary, the Permanent Mission of Monaco to the United Nations organized a concert by the Orchestra of the Prince’s Carabinieri of Monaco, in the heart of the emblematic General Assembly Hall of the Headquarters of the United Nations.
