Through MonaBike, Monaco hopes to develop a cycling culture. In summer 2019, the Principality gained a new fleet of self-service electric bikes. A total of 300 electric bikes are available from 32 stations.
The availability of electric bikes in Monaco is not a new thing.
The service was introduced in 2010 and launched commercially in 2013. Today, the new fleet offered by Canadian company PBSC (which already operates in 32 cities around the world, including Montreal, London, New York and Barcelona) allows regular and occasional users to get around the city noiselessly at speeds of up to 25 km/h, thanks to an on-board battery with a capacity of 60 km.
Through MonaBike, the Principality is demonstrating its desire to move away from a reliance on cars. The initiative, which complements the public transport options that are also available in the Principality, is part of a public policy to reduce greenhouse gases.
Monaco has set a target of reducing its emissions by 30% in 2020 (compared to a 1990 baseline) and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
