Formerly known as the Monaco and Riviera Marathon, Monaco Run has evolved into a major road and trail running event. Among its races, the 5 km has gained international recognition for the world records set on its course.

The event was first launched in 1997 as part of the celebrations marking the 700th anniversary of the Grimaldidynasty. Organised by the Monegasque Athletics Federation from 1997 to 2010 under the name Monaco and Riviera Marathon, it was rebranded as Monaco Run in 2011. Originally centred on a marathon, the programme later expanded to include a 23.8 km race between Ventimiglia and Monaco, as well as a 10 km. The format has continued to evolve over time.

Today, Monaco Run features four races: the 5 km, the City Trail, the 10 km and the Trail du Mont Agel, which includes a descent through the Monte-Carlo Golf Club before returning to Monaco. The flagship 5 km has seen four world records: Sifan Hassan and Julien Wanders in 2019, Joshua Cheptegei in 2020 and Beatrice Chepkoech in 2021. In 2023, French distance runner Jimmy Gressier (aged 25) set a European road 5 km record in 13:12.

In 2024, Yann Schrub won the 5 km in 13:22, becoming the third-fastest French athlete ever over the distance.

In 2026, Kenyan middle-distance legend Faith Kipyegon lined up for the 10 km in her first road test over the distance. A three-time Olympic champion best known for her track performances, she completed the race in an impressive 29:46. In the men’s race, Abdellah Kertoum, a Moroccan athlete competing for a French club, finished in 30:25.

In the 5 km, Dutch runner Tim Verbaandert claimed victory in 13:24, while his compatriot Diane Van Es won the women’s race in 14:33.

As part of Monaco Run, a 5 km charity walk is organised by Pink Ribbon Monaco to raise funds and increase awareness in the fight against breast cancer, including through free screening initiatives. “This walk is a joyful and inclusive moment,” said Natasha Frost-Savio, President and Founder of Pink Ribbon, speaking to Monaco Info. “Above all, it is about celebrating life.”

In 2024, Princess Charlene became Honorary President of Pink Ribbon Monaco.
