Behind each Monaco Grand Prix is found a legend. A brief history of a weekend of motor racing unlike any other in the world.

Originally nicknamed the ‘Race of 1,000 Corners’, this urban grand prix has, since it was first introduced, asserted itself as one of the three events that make up the famous Triple Crown of Motorsport, alongside the no less celebrated Indianapolis 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Barely changed since 1930, the legendary circuit has retained all of its character, although the backdrop has been heavily updated over the decades.

Some of the highlights experienced over the course of its history include the victories of Juan Manuel Fangio (El Maestro) and British driver Stirling Moss, which quickly made Monaco an essential event on the racing calendar, providing both a demanding test for competitors and an exciting show for spectators.

In 1964, Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace presented the trophy to Graham Hill, a five-time winner of the Monaco Grand Prix (a record at the time, which has since been matched).

It was on Monaco’s legendary circuit that Ayrton Senna was introduced to the world in 1984 – even though it was Alain Prost, a four-time champion in the Principality, who drove to victory that year. With five wins, Michael Schumacher has also made his mark on the history of the Monaco Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who have won the race in the Principality twice and three times respectively, are more recent additions to the honour roll for this unparalleled Grand Prix… Could Charles Leclerc be next?
