Designed by the architects Renzo Piano and Valode et Pistre, the buildings being constructed in the sea will be completed at the end of 2024. It’s an enormous technical and environmental challenge.

Work on Mareterra project began in autumn 2017. This new eco-district being built on six hectares of reclaimed land will be home to 60,000 mof luxury housing, an extension to the Grimaldi Forum, Monaco’s cultural and convention centre, a one-hectare park, a marina and public facilities.

This addition to Monaco’s territory will promote the Principality’s dynamic economy, architecture and culture, while staying true to the approach established by Prince Albert II: “Building in the sea while safeguarding the environment”.

“The choice of the site of Anse du Portier, the last “shoal” of this Principality was a natural choice knowing that the complexity of an extension at sea increases considerably with the depth of the seabed.

This new extension was deliberately limited to 6 hectares in order to control the consequences on the marine environment. The Mareterra district, designed by renowned architects, is completely integrated into the sideline and aims to become an almost natural extension”, explains Jean-Luc Nguyen, director of public works.

The project developer, SAM Anse du Portier, and the builder, Bouygues Travaux Publics, are also employing a large number of innovative techniques to minimise the impact of construction on marine ecosystems and develop the new construction technologies that make this possible.

It’s a huge challenge, with urban extension projects globally mainly taking place in coastal regions.

“Mareterra is the first eco-district labeled “high environmental quality” (HQE) in Monaco, also foreshadowing a new co-responsible management, contributing to the Principality’s objectives in terms of reducing greenhouse gases (carbon neutrality in 2050)”, told Jean-Luc Nguyen, director of public works.
