The Grimaldi Forum has established itself as the Principality’s cultural and business tourism showcase.

Officially opened in 2000, the Grimaldi Forum Monaco has two roles: as a cultural centre and as an events space. This flagship venue, which bears the prince’s family’s name, symbolises the policy of developing large-scale State infrastructure pursued by Prince Rainier III, who was known as the “Builder Prince”. The 70,000 m2 complex was built over the Mediterranean Sea. The spectacular design, featuring concrete, glass and steel, was conceived by Monegasque architects Fabrice Notari and Frédéric Génin.

From Sportel to the Television Festival, Luxe Pack Monaco and the cybersecurity conference Les Assises… by hosting around 80 business and cultural events a year, the Forum directly contributes to Monaco’s economic development and influence.

The Grimaldi Forum presents high-level exhibitions, bringing together works of art from all over the world, drawn from both private collections and the planet’s greatest museums. In 2021, the exhibition “Alberto Giacometti. A Retrospective. Marvellous Reality” was the latest in a string of major artist monographs which have previously been exhibited at the Grimaldi Forum, including those featuring Dali, Picasso, Bacon and Warhol. The exhibition is also one of the biggest retrospectives ever devoted to this significant artist of the twentieth century, presenting 230 works within a space of 2,500 m2.

The cultural centre additionally hosts and co-produces performances by Monegasque institutions such as the Opera, the Ballet, the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Théâtre Princesse Grace and the Sérénissimes de l’Humour comedy festival. Over the last few years, it has also put its faith in musical theatre direct from the London West End, bringing in top international shows such as Grease, Mamma Mia, Fame, Chicago, West Side Story and Cats.

From 2025, Grimaldi Forum Monaco will grow its exhibition capacity by 50%, with close to an additional 6,000 m² thanks to the Principality’s new offshore urban extension project. This new space will enable the venue to host larger-scale events.

Thanks to its urban solar power plant, in 2019 Grimaldi Forum Monaco became the Principality’s biggest energy producer.

There are currently almost 1,500 photovoltaic panel modules covering an area of 2,500 m2 on the roof of the Forum, generating total power of 526 kWc. The annual electricity production of around 640,000 kWh is sufficient to power the equivalent of 170 homes in the Principality.
