The club began its extensive record of success in 1960, when it beat AS St-Etienne to secure the Coupe de France. The following year, the team won its first French championship title with Michel Hidalgo as captain, a feat it went on to repeat seven more times.
The club’s iconic strip, featuring a diagonal red-and-white design, was conceived by Princess Grace during this era.
After dominating French football for a time, AS Monaco experienced a more inconsistent period in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
In response to this, the Monegasque training centre was set up in the late 1970s. In 1977/1978, the team – largely made up of players trained at the club – achieved the feat of becoming French champions in the very same year that they were promoted back up to the elite league.
Many great teams and prominent names were to follow, some of the most memorable of whom include Jean-Luc Ettori, Claude Puel, Manuel Amoros, George Weah, Emmanuel Petit, Youri Djorkaeff, Lilian Thuram, Jürgen Klinsmann, Enzo Scifo, Thierry Henry, David Trezeguet, Fabien Barthez, Ludovic Giuly, Marco Simone, Marcello Gallardo, Fernando Morientes, Falcao, Thomas Lemar and Kylian Mbappé, and that’s before we get to today’s players…
And they have been able to count on some fantastic coaches to train them, such as Arsène Wenger, Jean Tigana, Didier Deschamps, Claudio Ranieri and Leonardo Jardim.
In addition to the club’s national achievements (eight championships, five Coupe de France titles, one Coupe de la Ligue win, and four champions’ trophies), the history of AS Monaco includes several memorable European adventures, for example in 1990 (Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final), in 1992 (Cup Winners’ Cup final), in 1998 (Champions’ League semi-final), in 2004 (Champions’ League final) and in 2017 (Champions’ League semi-final).
French 1998 world champions Thuram, Petit, Trezeguet and Henry, along with their more recent counterparts, 2018 world champions Mbappé, Sidibé and Lamar, are all talented players who got their start in Monaco.
The Louis II Stadium, officially opened in 1984, is the club’s home. In addition to a football pitch, it features an athletics track, multipurpose sports hall (which now serves as the home of AS Monaco Basket), Olympic-sized swimming pool and other facilities.
